Sports Leadership for young people
The Blaby & Harborough SSP offers a range of opportunities for young people to develop leadership skills through sport. These skills are developed right from the youngest ages at primary school, progressing through the Leadership Pathway:
Sporting Ambassadors This locally developed programme is delivered by Key Stage 4 students for pupils across their feeder high and primary schools. A conference is held for each family of schools where selected Key Stage 2, 3 and 4 Sporting Ambassadors attend. The pupils are trained in being ‘ambassadors’ for sport in their schools, and are tasked to develop an action plan for their school to inspire other young people to get involved in sport, for example, holding assemblies, developing newsletters and launching a Sports Council.

Key Stage 2 Super Leaders is a locally developed programme where selected Key Stage 2 pupils are trained in leading playground activities with other pupils at their school. The programme has run since 2005. Pupils are encouraged to work alongside lunchtime supervisors to make their playgrounds an inclusive and active place for everyone.
Key Stage 3 Sports Leaders UK Young Leaders Award. Every high school in the Partnership runs each year the Young Leaders Award, enabling pupils to gain a nationally recognised qualification in Sports Leadership. Around 250 young people each year complete the course in the Partnership, either as part of a curriculum or extra curricular activity. Once qualified, the young people are involved in a range of leadership opportunities within their own school, and often within their family of primary schools.
Key Stage 4 & 5 Generic leadership and sports specific opportunities. At Key Stage 4 & 5 young people are given the opportunity to take part in a range of leadership qualifications, including the Sports Leaders UK Level 1 & 2 certificates in Sports Leadership, and national governing body of sport leadership qualifications.
Step into Sport Key Stage 4 students are given the opportunity to take part in the Step into Sport programme, which links the young people with community sports clubs. The young people attend a Conference with other students from across the area, and challenged to complete 50 – 200 hours of community sports volunteering over the course of a year.
2012 Young Ambassadors Each year 3 young people from the Partnership are chosen for their outstanding contribution to sports leadership to be part of a national leadership programme linked to the Olympic and Paralympic Games. They attend a nationally led conference and then work locally to inspire other young people to get involved in sport and physical activity.

Personal Profile
I’m 16 and currently living in Lutterworth with my parents and older brother. At the moment I’m studying P.E, Geography, Biology and Graphic design at A.S. I hope to achieve good A levels and go to university. I have many interests, however my major passion is mountain biking, I recently got sponsored by FOX which is a mountain biking company. I ride in competitions and train weekly for them and hope some day I will be doing it professionally. Another sporting passion of mine is rock climbing. I rock climb once a week indoors and try get out to the peak district at the weekends as much as possible, I am currently half way through my S.P.A training which will eventually allow me to be fully qualified to take people out rock climbing. During the summer I usually go abroad to France or Spain but not for your usual relaxing holiday, I love to go to northern Spain and go surfing, it’s a huge love of mine but find time hard to do it regularly. This summer I went to the French alps and concurred the highest mountain in Western Europe, Mont Blanc. This was a huge achievement for me.
My other interests include art and music, music is a big love of mine I enjoy going to concerts I also recently went to Glastonbury festival with a few of my friends it was an amazing experience and cant wait to go next year.
One day I hope to become someone successful, I hope to achieve good A Levels and carry on my education further at university. I am at the moment looking into a university course at Lancaster to become an outdoor pursuit instructor this course allows me to work for a company and be fully qualified to take students and other people outdoors to do certain activities like mountaineering, kayaking, rock climbing, canoeing and skiing, this is my ideal job as I am a very energetic person who gets distracted and bored very easily this job will keep me occupied and entertained. I prefer to work in groups rather than independently, I like to have my opinions taken into account. I also have the tendency to take in charge as I like things done my way.

I am a keen sports woman whose passion for sport was ignited at a very early age by an inspiring teacher at my primary school who encouraged me from my first experience of athletics through to school rounders and netball. The highlight of my younger years was captaining an undefeated year 6 netball team! I started playing cricket aged 11 at high school and was undeterred by being the only girl. I went on to play both girls and senior county cricket and am now proud to be representing England as a member of the un19 girls indoor cricket team who will be playing in this year’s world cup held in Brisbane, Australia.
For a number of years I have known that I want to teach P.E and to this end, having completed my GCSE’s I am now studying as-levels in P.E, English language, Biology and Psychology at Lutterworth College with a view to going on to take a sports based degree.
I have a desire to see the world and explore what I have not yet been able to, for that reason I hope to take a gap year to go travelling and be involved in some form of charity work prior going to university.
When I am not playing sport, I enjoy socialising with friends at a party or by having a girly night in watching films, retail therapy always manages to find a spot in my diary and I am constantly indulging my love of music by going to concerts, festivals and listening to my pride possession, the iPod!

As well as playing netball, I really enjoy passing on what I have learnt to others who enjoy the game, above is a picture of ‘George at Asda’ ladies netball team who in the past year I have started coaching.
