Gifted and Talented Academies 2010
Key Stage 2 Academies
Our 2010 provision for talented young sports people in Blaby and Harborough will be launched after February half term. Gifted and Talented Academies will take place for year 6 pupils in each of the 6 families of schools (Leysland, Brockington, Welland Park, Kibworth, Lutterworth, Thomas Estley).
Primary school staff have been trained to select talented pupils in their schools, who are then invited to attend 5 weeks of activities along with other talented pupils from neighbouring primary schools.
The Academies this year will include a range of sporting opportunities including table tennis, hockey, badminton, martial arts, street dance, TAG rugby, basketball. At the end of the block of sessions, pupils will be assessed and then selected pupils will be invited to attend the Talent Camp at Leicester Grammar School on 1st and 2nd June 2010. All activities will be delivered by qualified, CRB checked and experienced coaches who will be able to nurture the talent of the young people attending.

Following the Talent Camp, we hope that selected pupils will be invited to attend the Regional Multi Skills Academy co-ordinated by the Youth Sport Trust at Loughborough University. Last year, 6 lucky participants attended this event from Blaby and Harborough along with other young people from across the region, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves!
All young people involved in the Talent programme will receive information on local opportunities to continue to develop their interest in sport. We hope that they will thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to participate with other talented young people from their area, and try new and exciting activities.
Key Stage 3 Academies
Talented pupils from each of the High Schools in our Partnership area will be invited during the summer term to take part in a Talent Academy at their local Upper School. They will participate in a range of new and exciting activities alongside pupils from the other High School in their family of schools. They will have the opportunity to meet with PE staff and other pupils from the Upper School, and to start to think about how they will continue their sporting careers as they find out about the sporting pathways open to them.
Gifted & Talented Academies 2009
Spring 2009 saw the launch of our first Year 6 Gifted & Talented Academy programme with the aim of supporting young people who are gifted in PE. How did it happen? Well…
As we have 6 families of primary schools we decided that we needed 6 Academies with space for 30 young people in each. Spaces were allocated according to size of school nominating. Teachers had in service training linked to identifying and recognizing G & T in PE. 180 young people had the opportunity to take part in this programme.
Continuous assessment throughout – finishing with a final assessment which enabled up to 10 talented athletes from each family group being invited to attend the 2 day Academy Camp at Leicester Grammar School on Tuesday 26th & Wednesday 27th of May.

We also attended the East Midlands Regional Multi Skill Academy; this was held at Nottingham Trent University on Thursday 30th of April, 6 talented athletes (1 from each of the family groups) had the opportunity of working alongside other talented athletes from many different schools.
Many thanks to both their families and schools for allowing this to happen, it was the first time we had had this opportunity. Our athletes were an outstanding credit to us.
James from The Pastures Primary School, Harvey from GreenField Primary School, Joshua from Old Mill Primary School, Jordie from Ridgeway Primary School, Francesca from Kibworth Primary School.
