WORLD SPORT DAY 2012

London 2012 and Lloyds TSB invite you to celebrate the world's arrival in the UK for the London 2012 Games – go to www.london2012.com/worldsportday to register

London 2012 World Sport Day, presented by Lloyds TSB in England and Wales and Bank of Scotland in Scotland, is a major part of Get Set goes global. It’s happening on Monday 25 June 2012.

It’s an exciting opportunity for your school/college to celebrate the world’s arrival in the UK for the greatest festivals of sport, and all the Values and Games-related work you have been doing.

Branded tools and resources will be available to help schools create and host an international celebration that embraces the teams and athletes of the 205 Olympic and 170 Paralympic teams. The aim is to celebrate the multiculturalism of the school's local community, and to showcase the sports and cultures of their chosen Olympic and Paralympic teams.

As part of the celebration, your school will be able to access the following World Sport Day resources:

  • An event pack full of branded materials to help decorate schools for the opening celebration and their own international celebrations
  • Activity ideas for schools to embrace the cultures of their supported teams throughout the life of a school
  • An exciting toolkit and case studies to guide teachers and students in the planning of their opening celebration and international celebrations
  • Create your own school goodies and decorations by using our ‘we’re a supporter’ kits for your supported Olympic and Paralympic team

For schools in Northern Ireland, World Sport Day is a great opportunity to run an activity or host an event to mark the arrival of the world for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and to mark the culmination of your Get Set goes global work.

If you’re in England and Wales, World Sport Day is the opening celebration for Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week, and if you’re in Scotland, it’s a great way to keep your Bank of Scotland National School Sport Week celebrations running right through to the end of term.

London 2012 World Sport Day is delivered by the Youth Sport Trust.

Schools can now request a London 2012 World Sport Day event pack full of branded goodies to help dress your school. Event packs will be delivered in the Spring Term.

Learning South Leicestershire SSP 2012 Values Challenge – ‘Can you live like an Olympian?’

The 2012 Values Challenge is aimed at pupils in years 4 – 9 and is designed to encourage them to think about what each value means, how an Olympian embodies each value in their lives, and how the values can be important in the lives of each and every one of us.

We hope that the Challenge will be an interesting way for your school to explore the Olympics, and could be a project for your Sporting Ambassadors to get involved with, for example by introducing it in assembly.

The Values Challenge works in the following way:

  • Pupils are given a ‘Can you live like an Olympian?’ booklet containing 7 Challenge pages linked to each value.  An example of the booklet is enclosed with this letter.
  • Pupils complete a challenge linked to each value (some ideas are listed on each page) and on completion of each page asks their teacher to sign it and put a sticker at the top of the page.

On completion of all 7 values pupils will be awarded with a certificate to show they have completed the 2012 Values Challenge.

Learning South Leicestershire SSP Sporting Ambassadors

Throughout 2011 and 2012 schools will be invited to train their pupils as Sporting Ambassadors.

The Sporting Ambassador programme is an initiative which empowers youngsters around the country to inspire their friends and peers and will form a key part of the London 2012 activities in schools in the run up to the Games

As part of this programme, each school will be invited to train their young people within their family of schools, led by secondary aged Sporting Ambassadors, to inspire their fellow pupils to take part in PE and school sport.

The aims of the programme are:

  • To advocate the ethos and values of the Olympic and Paralympic movement
  • To champion sport within local communities
  • To create role models for other young people
  • To aspire to inspire participation
