PROJECT ABILITY
In Learning South Leicestershire, we are working as part of a partnership of schools across Leicester and Leicestershire to develop opportunities for disabled young people to participate in sport through Project Ability. The Lead Project Ability school in our area is Ellesmere College in Leicester.
Project Ability aims to increase opportunities to improve and extend provision for young disabled pupils to take part in competitive sport. This will be achieved through a range of interventions and activities, including a national network of 50 lead schools who have established expertise in engaging young disabled people.
Project Ability schools will be delivered as part of the School Games, and includes:
1. Delivering bespoke training, developed by the Youth Sport Trust, and providing local advice and guidance to School Games Organisers and Host Schools.
2. Driving the establishment and implementation of more local competitive opportunities for young disabled people.
3. Sustaining young people’s participation beyond their involvement in competition through the development of school club activities.
The interventions and activities for Project Ability include:
- · Innovation with NGBs to establish inclusive formats with tips and advice on how to adapt activities as well as specific impairment formats
- · Training for all SGOs in disability awareness and the planning/delivery of inclusive competitions
- · Equipping all schools to increase participation by those young disabled people who need more substantial or significant help through TOP Sportsability
- · The inclusion of disability events within Level 3 county events

INCLUSIVE FOOTBALL OPPORTUNITIES
Annually a partnership between the Harborough Alliance Inclusive Football Partnership (made up of football clubs from the Harborough area, Leics & Rutland County FA, Harborough District Council and the Blaby & Harborough School Sports Partnership) delivers an Inclusive Football Festival for children with SEN and disabilities, using fun skills and activities led by qualified sports coaches.
The event, which is free of charge, will take place on Friday 30th May 2011 between 9.45am – 12noon at Harborough Town Football Club in Market Harborough. The event has been run very successfully for the past 5 years and is very enjoyable for all who attend.
For pupils who enjoy the activities, there is the opportunity for them to take part in regular sessions throughout the year, run by the Harborough IFP. Information on this will be given out at the festival. Other providers of inclusive activities will also be present, including the Harborough Inclusive Sports Club and the Lutterworth Rotary Club.
Pupils attending from your school will need to be accompanied by an appropriate adult (this could be a parent). There will be enough qualified coaches at the event to work with quite small groups of children with all equipment provided. You can send as many pupils as you like to the event.
If you have any questions about the event, please do not hesitate to contact either Mary Rudkin, Football Development Officer for Disability at the County FA on 0116 2844952 or Ruth Mann on 0116 277 1555
