Dance on Canvas

Primary school pupils across Market Harborough and Lutterworth are involved this year in a new dance project ‘Dance on Canvas’.  The SSP has co-ordinated the project which is being delivered by the well respected dance professional Sue Rosenbloom of Bloomdance and supported by Extended Services.  The idea behind the project is that pupils explore a particular piece of art and create a dance performance that has been inspired by it.  Schools  then come together to perform their dances joined by dancers from The Robert Smyth School, Kibworth High School and Lutterworth College.

Through the experience it is hoped that pupils will grow in confidence, enjoy physical activity and have a fantastic creative experience.

The project has been funded by the Sport Unlimited fund accessed by the School Sports Partnership.

Destination boys dance project

High School boys throughout Blaby and Harborough will be taking part in an innovative project co-ordinated  by BHSSP in conjunction with Youth Dance England.

Each high school will host a workshop in boys dance delivered by Donald Edwards, male dance expert, as part of the Destination project.  School staff will be encouraged to benefit from the chance to work alongside Donald through the project.

Interested boys will then be given the opportunity to work with other boys from across the Partnership at weekly sessions hosted by Kibworth High School.  The boys will work towards a performance to take place in Leicester alongside other boys from across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Donald Edwards is a founder member of both Phoenix Dance Company and RJC Dance Theatre and worked extensively with both companies for over 22 years, touring nationally and internationally, performing, teaching, choreographing and directing rehearsal. His work with RJC was intrinsic in the development of a Black British dance style, fusing formal training in contemporary dance with a range of social and cultural dance and music styles. Donald Edwards was among the Phoenix Dance Theatre of which was a nominee for an Lawrence Olivia Award. RJC was the proud recipient of a Black Achievers Award. Donald was featured in the Educational programmes for schools with BBC2, based on social dance styles.

Ruth Bates, Dance Development Officer for LLR said “We really hope this fantastic opportunity will be a chance to engage more boys in dance.  Through effective partnership working we have been able to access significant funds to make this project possible
